Virtual Water in Angola and Namibia

Angola can be considered a water rich country (Turton 2002). In the late 1990s, Angola’s import of virtual water amounted to roughly 31 m³ per capita and year (Kumar and Singh 2005). The situation has changed since then. In 2007, the country imported 207 m³ per capita of virtual water in trade of the most important agricultural commodities alone (calculations based on FAOSTAT, Hoekstra and Chapagain 2008 and Population Reference Bureau, www.prb.org).

Although Namibia can be classified as water deficient, the country exports substantial quantities of virtual water in terms of agricultural trade. In 2007, net virtual water exports through trade with the most important agricultural commodities were 168 m³ per capita (calculations based on FAOSTAT, Hoekstra and Chapagain 2008 and Population Reference Bureau, www.prb.org).
