Research and Development

Decision-making on development and management of the Kunene River basin should be based on robust and up-to-date baseline data and analysis of the hydrology, hydrogeology, hydraulics, ecology, land use and current water demand in the basin. Future trends in these areas need to be assessed and considered accordingly, especially in the light of expected climate change impacts.

As discussed in the Resource Monitoring section, the data and information required for these analyses are currently not all available, in particular for the Angolan part of the Kunene River basin. Thus, further extensive research – in form of basin-wide assessments – will be required to provide an adequate knowledge base for strategic development and management of the Kunene River basin.
